Walking the Narrative of the Earth

Mt. Fuji Explorer

Experience the deep contrast of Mount Fuji: the landscapes forged by volcanic activity, and the culture born from reverence for nature. We guide guests beyond the surface, revealing the true soul of the Fuji region.

Tour Elements
Fire — The Earth in Motion

1,200 years ago, an eruption of Mount Fuji covered the land in lava and divided the existing lakes. On this terrain, despite the scarcity of soil and water, the Aokigahara Forest was formed.

This section involves walking the forest trails established on the lava plateau and visiting caves formed during the eruption. At the lakeside, the points where the lava flows met the water remain visible. The journey concludes with an ascent to a high vantage point to observe Mount Fuji and the extent of the forest below, providing a clear perspective on the formation of this landscape.

Nenba-hama: The scale of the lava flow at the lake’s edge.
Jukai Trail: Forest regeneration on volcanic rock.
Ryugu Cave: Subterranean formations created by lava.
Sankodai: A panoramic view of the forest’s extent.

Water — Culture & Faith

To appease the volcanic eruptions, a sanctuary was established near the lake to enshrine the deity of Mount Fuji. Within the grounds of Kawaguchi Asama Shrine stand sacred cedar trees over 1,200 years old. During the Edo period, as the culture of mountain pilgrimage flourished, worshippers purified themselves at the waterfall behind the shrine before ascending the mountain.

This section follows the path from the ancient cedar groves to the purification falls. The route includes a visit to the Yohaijo, a site of worship marked by a gate positioned to face the peak. We trace the cultural heritage born from a profound reverence for the natural world.
